25.6.24

The architectural landscape shifts at such a rapid pace that we like to check in with what's going on at regular intervals. Let's take a look up at the world's newest record-breaking buildings in 2023 and 2024 that test the limits of engineering, design and construction.

Merdeka 118 - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

What's the second tallest building in the world? Easy. It's The Merdeka 118. This 678.9-metre-high record-breaker skyscraper is topped only by the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, UAE, and is still making waves in 2024 because of its 118 stories. Office space, residential apartments, hotels, and shopping are what's inside, while its spire design draws inspiration from Malaysia's rich cultural heritage. The skydeck boasts panoramic views of Kuala Lumpur.

Iconic Tower - New Administrative Capital, Egypt

What's Africa's tallest building? As of 2023, and towering 385 metres off the ground, it's The Iconic Tower in Egypt. It's the centerpiece of Egypt's ambitious New Administrative Capital project, housing government offices, retail spaces, and luxury apartments. Its sleek, modern design fuses with energy-efficient technologies and sustainable architecture.

Jeddah Tower - Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

The Jeddah Tower aims to be the first building to reach 1 kilometer in height once completed in the next few years. After a few hiccups, construction resumed in October 2023. Designed by Adrian Smith, the same architect behind the Burj Khalifa, the tower will have over 200 floors and is engineered to withstand the unrelenting desert temperatures and winds.

Central Park Tower - New York City, USA

New York City's Central Park Tower was completed in 2020 but remains the world's tallest residential building. At 472 meters tall, you can't miss it on Billionaires Row. Every now and again one of the apartments comes up for sale and you can see for yourself videos of the magnificent views over Manhattan and Central Park.

Wuhan Greenland Center - Wuhan, China

The Wuhan Greenland Center will be one of the tallest buildings in China when it's finished this year. Standing at an eye-watering 636 metres high, this super-skyscraper will be home to offices, luxury apartments, and a hotel. Its aerodynamic design and triangular structure reduce wind resistance.
